The school opened in 1930 with girls from the Senior Girls' School, Albert Road, Darlington and the Harrowgate Hill Senior School, Darlington both of which then closed. North Road School itself closed in 1968 and the pupils transferred to Longfield Comprehensive. The building remained until 2010 when it was demolished.
The school's old building captured in 2009 by Google Street view, the year before it was demolished.
