The then new school was opened in 1936 as South Shields High School for Boys following an amalgamation of South Shields High School (1885–1936) and Westoe Secondary School (1890–1936. ) It became South Shields Grammar Technical School between 1953 and 1974 when it became Harton Comprehensive. Then in 2001 Harton Technology College until 2017 when the school gained academy status, henceforth known as Harton Academy..
